Inbred or outbred — which should I choose?

Inbred strains (such as C57BL/6, BALB/c) come from at least 20 consecutive generations of sibling mating, giving individuals a highly consistent genetic background — well suited to mechanistic research that needs tight control over genetic variables. Outbred strains have a more diverse genetic background, closer to a natural population, and are usually lower cost — a better fit when strict genetic uniformity matters less than population-level representativeness.

Why does an immunodeficient model need its own selection consultation?

Immunodeficient models come in many varieties (nude mice, NOD-SCID, NCG, and others), and different strains lack different immune cell types to different degrees — which directly determines how well they tolerate human cell/tissue transplants and what they're suited for. Choosing the wrong model can lead to graft rejection or a poor experimental window, which is exactly why this category of model is usually best selected with a dedicated consultation rather than by guesswork.

Why does a custom genetically engineered animal model take so much longer than cell line editing?

An animal model starts from microinjection into a fertilized egg, followed by implantation, gestation, and breeding through to a usable generation with the target genotype — with animal facility coordination and ethics approval along the way. The whole process is typically measured in months (roughly 4–6 months), much longer than cell line editing, so plan your experimental timeline accordingly.

Is shipping the same for in-stock classic strains and custom models?

Shipping live animals requires special transport qualifications and conditions (temperature control, ventilation, stress management in transit, etc.). The specific shipping arrangement is generally confirmed separately based on strain, quantity, and destination — it's not a standardized logistics flow, so it's best to confirm shipping details with a technical advisor before ordering.
