Inbred strains (such as C57BL/6, BALB/c) come from at least 20 consecutive generations of sibling mating, giving individuals a highly consistent genetic background — well suited to mechanistic research that needs tight control over genetic variables. Outbred strains have a more diverse genetic background, closer to a natural population, and are usually lower cost — a better fit when strict genetic uniformity matters less than population-level representativeness.
Immunodeficient models come in many varieties (nude mice, NOD-SCID, NCG, and others), and different strains lack different immune cell types to different degrees — which directly determines how well they tolerate human cell/tissue transplants and what they're suited for.
