Selection Tips
FAQ

What do STR authentication and mycoplasma testing actually verify?

STR (short tandem repeat) profiling compares a cell line's unique genetic fingerprint to confirm that this batch is really the cell line it claims to be — cell lines carry a real risk of cross-contamination and mislabeling over long-term passage, and STR profiling is the internationally recognized standard for verifying cell line identity. Mycoplasma testing confirms whether the culture system is contaminated with mycoplasma — unlike bacterial contamination, mycoplasma contamination isn't visible as cloudiness to the naked eye, but it quietly affects growth rate and metabolic state, undermining the reliability of your results.

Where's the line between in-stock cell lines and custom cell line services?

In-stock cell lines are established lines ready to thaw and use directly (such as 293T, HeLa). If what you need is "knock out/knock in a specific gene in a given cell line background" or "build a stable cell line with a fluorescent reporter," that falls under custom services, with its own line-establishment timeline (typically 2–3 months or more) and isn't part of the in-stock inventory.

How long after thawing can cells go into a formal experiment?

After thawing, it's generally recommended to passage cells stably for at least 2–3 rounds and confirm normal cell state (adherence morphology, stable proliferation rate) before using them in a formal experiment. Using freshly thawed cells directly can introduce instability from freeze-thaw damage, affecting reproducibility.

What happens if a cell line is passaged too many times?

Over long-term passage, cell lines can gradually drift genetically and shift in phenotype (growth rate, differentiation state, etc.). It's generally recommended to keep passage numbers within a limited range (tolerance varies by cell line) and periodically thaw a fresh vial from early-passage stock rather than continuing to use highly passaged cells.
